Watchful Eye

Male Bald Eagle perched above his nest containing eggs. Both the male and female take turns sitting on the eggs, but the female is chief sitter. Both birds have a distinctive, featherless Brood Patch on the breasts that keeps the eggs warm. The female's is larger and more defined. The Brood Patch rests gently upon the eggs to provide warmth ensuring the eggs are maintained at a constant temperature of 105 degrees.

Killdeer - Charadrius vociferus

The Killdeer is a wading bird of the plover family. The bird is rightfully named for its high-pitched call that sounds as if it is saying, 'Kill Deer.' This Killdeer has just returned to the semi-frozen lakes of NW Montana from the wintering grounds of Central and South America. A sure sign that Spring has arrived in the Inland Pacific Northwest.

Cygnus buccinator. Trumpeters are elusive birds and sensitive to human disturbance. They are skeptical to humans approaching too closely and will paddle swiftly away in the opposite direction or, as a general rule, take immediate flight. Due to their wary traits Trumpeter Swans can prove to be quite challenging subjects to photograph.
